The No. 1 reason dogs and cats are taken to a veterinarian is obesity, nationwide!

There is a great deal of discussion about diet these days, and thankfully, it is finally starting to be a discussion that involves some common sense.

Human nutritionists are now acknowledging that the amount and kind of carbohydrate in the diet can be a major cause of obesity.  There is sound scientific reason for this, and there has been all along, even when there was no recognition of these principles.

Every time blood sugar rises, which is every time soluble carbohydrates are eaten, insulin comes forth and does it thing, and the dog gets fatter.  The problem is that insulin simply wasn't invented for the modern times; it is too efficient at its job, especially when we ignore its power.

But to whatever extent the diet can be lowered in amount of soluble carbohydrates, the diet is improved.  And one way to lower carbohydrates is to increase other components of the diet, such as fat and protein.
